Impetigo Overview of Impetigo Impetigo is a very common, contagious, bacterial skin infection. It affects the superficial layers of the skin, especially the skin of the face, arms and legs. Impetigo is most common in infants and children. Causes of Impetigo Impetigo is usually caused by either staphylococcal or streptococcal bacteria. or a combination of both of these microorganisms. Signs and Symptoms of Impetigo Impetigo produces a red rash with many small blisters. The blisters may contain pus, and form yellow crusts when they break.
