Facet Syndrome

Overview of Facet Syndrome

overview

The spine is composed of multiple vertebral segments. They connect to one another in the front by the disc and ligaments and in the back by the facet joints and ligaments. The orientation of the facet joints allows movements to occur only in certain directions. The joints are held together by rough ligaments. Degeneration of these joints or acute injuries to these joints or their ligaments can lead to facet syndrome.

Causes of Facet Syndrome

causes

Facet syndrome is caused by injury to the ligaments that hold the facet joint together. Also, degeneration of the joint, with its partial disruption, produces facet joint syndrome.

Signs and Symptoms of Facet Syndrome

signs and symptoms

Facet syndrome produces low back pain and buttock pain, which may be unilateral or bilateral. Prolonged sitting and bending forward or backwards may worsen the symptoms.
