Pruritis vulvae is an acute or chronic disorder of the skin around the vulva (the vaginal lips) and anus. It is varcharacterized by severe itching. It is not contagious. It primarily affects either adolescent females or adults, especially after menopause.

Causes of Pruritus Vulvae

A number of disorders may produce the clinical spectrum of Pruritis vulvae. They include skin diseases such as psoriasis or lichen planus. Systemic diseases, such as diabetes, may produce similar symptoms. Atrophy and dryness of the vaginal tissues can be caused by estrogen deficiency. This can lead to increased itching. Skin reaction to irritants, such as toilet tissue, sanitary pads, soap, douches, deodorants, powders, perfume and fabrics can produce this disorder. Systemic allergies, including food allergies, can lead to pruritis vulvae. Disorders of the vagina or rectum, such as vaginitis or hemorrhoids, can also produce intense vaginal itching.

Signs and Symptoms of Pruritus Vulvae

Symptoms of pruritis vulvae include are primarily intense itching. The skin around the outer part of the vagina may become very sensitive and irritated. The skin may appear thin and dry. A white vaginal discharge may develop. Sexual intercourse may be painful.
